Keeping Your Muscle Mass

Keeping your muscle mass while on a weight loss program is one of the most important aspects that you need to concentrate on as this will help you to keep your fat percentage down long-term.

On the ultra low calorie diets the body begins to cannibalize its own muscle tissue as its defense mechanisms come into play.

An example of this is shown with some of these apparently slim fashion models who have quite high levels of body fat in proportion to their overall size.

The reason for this is the fact that they haven’t done any form of exercise or resistance training to maintain any reasonable level of muscle mass and this is only made worse by the fact that they are often eating a very low quality diet and nutrition is lacking.

It is not uncommon to see skinny models with cellulite and that is a sure sign that they are retaining fat in a higher percentage than they should be.

They would find that if they added a little bit of resistance training or even some form of decent exercise to their daily routine they would be able to still retain a slim figure but the body fat percentage would be considerably lower and they would look a lot more toned and healthy.

And healthy is what you should be aiming for when you go on a weight-loss program and not simply losing weight as actually improving your overall health and well-being will help you to live a better lifestyle for a lot longer.

Increasing your muscle mass also improves your metabolic rate whereas body fat has a very low level of metabolic activity. Nutritionists regard muscle as the furnace that burns in the body and this is what you should be aiming for.

If more weight loss programs focused on retaining muscle mass people would be unlikely to put the weight back on rapidly once they finished the program.

Christmas Dinner, Weight Loss and Your Health

The title should really read Christmas Dinner and NO weight loss if the amount of calories we consume is anything to go by. On Christmas Day, most of us can eat three or four times more than we do on a normal day – gulping thousands of calories in just a few hours. It seems we really take things to excess, and festive feasting should carry a health warning.

By over indulging, we can cause long term health problems for ourselves. While the extra eating will make our waistline bigger, it will also increase blood pressure and blood sugar levels.

To be honest, it will only cause problems if you already have a poor diet. If you eat healthily the rest of the year, and only over indulge on the big day, you should be OK. As long as you go back to your healthy diet the next day, then having a full Christmas dinner shouldn’t be a problem.

The problem comes if you already eat poorly throughout the year and then over indulge during the whole festive period. Heart disease, stroke and diabetes take a while to develop, but eating and drinking to excess at Christmas is only going to compound any problems that are already in the making.

Make your Christmas dinner more healthy by avoiding cooking in fat, having vegetable soup as a starter and leaving out suet from your Christmas pudding. Having smaller portions can make a big difference. It has been calculated that the average amount of calories that can be consumed on Christmas day is 3,240. The recommended daily intake of calories is 2,500 for men and 2,000 for women. You can see how the problem can be compounded if you were to indulge to excess for more than just Christmas Day.

Like has been said before on here, everything in moderation. You don’t have to stuff yourself like the Christmas turkey to make sure you have a good time. Fact is, if you eat a little less you will probably have a better time. And better health.

A Happy, And Healthy Christmas To All.

Natural Weight Loss Products – Do They Work?

December 14, 2009 by admin

There is an assumption made by many people that because a product is described as “natural”, it is automatically healthier for the body, but that is not always the case. Even natural ingredients, and particularly those that are added to weight loss supplements, can cause other problems that are harmful to your health.

There are many natural weight loss products that contain so little good substances in them that the likelihood of actually losing weight is negligible. That’s not to say they are all bad. There are some good natural weight loss products, but you need to be aware of the good and the bad. Some of these products are only being promoted purely as a source of income.

Over the years, the FDA has in fact banned many natural products that were being used in weight loss supplements, because of the mild to severe reactions they had been proven to have caused in some people. Many of these products are only acting as a diuretic, which causes you to lose water temporarily, and give the false impression that you are losing weight quickly. In actual fact, you will have a better chance of losing weight by increasing your water intake, and remaining hydrated at all times.

The best natural weight loss products are the good healthy foods that you should be eating every day. Fresh fruit and vegetables will always ensure that your body is getting the necessary vitamins and minerals it needs to function properly.

If you have existing health problems, like a heart disorder or high blood pressure then you need to get advice if you are considering a natural weight loss supplement, just to ensure your own safety. Blood pressure can be increased by some natural ingredients, so if you already have high blood pressure it is imperative to seek professional advice before starting any course.

As in most things really, common sense comes into play. Do your research on any natural ingredient you are thinking of using. And if you already have health problems, no matter how minor, please seek medical advice before starting any weight loss plan.

Same Diet, Same Results – Try Something New!

If you have been on a diet or weight loss program before, then you have to consider the results that you got from them, as that is what you can expect if you go on the same diet again.

Don’t just look at the diet itself, but at the time you were on it and whether you lost weight or not. You will also have to look at the period after you stopped the diet and consider how fast you put the weight back on, because very often the weight gain after a diet is the result of the diet itself.

If you decide to have another attempt at a diet you have previously tried where you lost weight rapidly, it is worthwhile looking a little further to see what the outcome was the last time you tried it. This may paint a different picture, and change your mind about how good this particular diet is. It may be time to consider a different way of losing weight, or, if we are being honest, losing fat, because it is very important to look at it this way.

Think about using a weight loss program that reduces the fat gradually, rather than rapidly, and is easy to maintain as you go about your daily routine. You will obviously think that it will take longer to lose the weight, but what you should be thinking about is getting to a weight and shape you are happy with and staying there for the rest of your life. It is of no use to you if you lose weight for a few months, then proceed to put it back on for the next few months, and then repeat the cycle over and over again.

This is all you can expect to get if that is what happened in the past, and in fact it will only become more difficult to lose weight, and easier to put it back on. So keep that thought in your mind before you decide to start another weight loss program.
